Attraction guide
Blue Mosque about what you should know.
The Blue Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616 for Sultan Ahmed I. Construction took seven years; the architect Sedefkar Mehmed Ağa was among the finest of his generation.
More than 20,000 İznik tiles cover the interior walls; their predominant blue tones gave the mosque its English name 'Blue Mosque'.
It stands directly opposite Hagia Sophia, with about 200 metres of Sultanahmet Square (the former Hippodrome) between them. The mosque is still actively used for prayer, so visiting hours work around the daily prayer schedule.
