Attraction guide
Sultanahmet Square (Hippodrome) about what you should know.
Sultanahmet Square was built in the Byzantine era as the Hippodrome — the chariot-racing arena. Begun by Septimius Severus around AD 203, it became the social and political centre of Constantinople.
Three major ancient monuments survive on the square: the Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius (1490 BC), the Greek Serpent Column (478 BC) and the Walled Obelisk of Constantine (10th century). The German Fountain was added in 1898.
Set between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, the square is essentially an open-air museum. Allow 30–45 minutes to see everything.
