Taksim Square is one of Istanbul's most recognisable squares and the symbolic centre of the modern city. Its name comes from the 18th-century distribution point (taksim) that channelled water from the Belgrad Forest into the city.
The Republic Monument, erected in 1928, stands at its centre. Taksim Mosque, opened in 2021, is the square's newest architectural element; the rebuilt Atatürk Cultural Centre reopened the same year.
İstiklal Avenue begins here; this is also the intersection of metro, bus and minibus lines, and one of the most popular drop-off points for airport transfers.
