Taxi scam: 'Broken Meter' / Renegotiated Mid-Trip
Driver claims meter broken, offers fixed price, then increases it mid-ride.
How it works
After you're inside and moving, driver announces 'meter broken' and quotes 3-5× normal. If you accept, the price grows further before destination.
Where it happens
Cross-Bosphorus rides, airport runs, late-night Taksim.
Red flags
- Meter announcement happens after you're moving
- Driver waves dismissively at the meter
What to do — during
Insist on going to next safe stop. Exit at first traffic light. Do not pay more than UKOME tariff would allow.
What to do — after
