Taxi scam: Tip Extortion / Luggage Hostage
Driver refuses to open trunk until extra 'tip' or fictitious 'luggage fee' paid.
How it works
After arrival, driver stays in seat, demands 100-300 TL extra before unlocking trunk. Your bags are inside.
Where it happens
Airport drop-offs, hotel arrivals at night.
Red flags
- Driver doesn't get out when you arrive
- Asks for 'baggage fee' not on the meter
What to do — during
Pay only metered amount. If stuck, call 155 (police) or 153 (IBB) loudly so driver hears. Keep cabin-size bags inside the car when possible.
What to do — after
Report with plate. No legal luggage surcharge exists in Istanbul taxi regulation.
