Don't get scammed in an Istanbul taxi

Quick checklist — before, during, after

Before getting in

  • Use official rank or app (BiTaksi/iTaksi/Uber)
  • Verify yellow plate starts with 34 T
  • See taksimetre + driver ID on dashboard
  • Ask "POS var mı?" — refuse if no
  • Photograph the plate

During the ride

  • Verify meter is on, code "1" (day)
  • Open Google Maps with destination pinned
  • Watch the route — calmly say "Google Maps ile gidin" if it diverges
  • Decline detours, carpet shops, "free tours"
  • Keep luggage inside cabin if possible

Paying

  • State amount aloud: "İki yüz lira veriyorum"
  • Confirm POS shows TRY (decline DCC to EUR)
  • Ask "Fiş alabilir miyim?" — keep receipt
  • Inspect change for torn/fake notes

Fake / Unlicensed Taxi (Korsan Taksi)
Unlicensed vehicles approach inside arrival halls offering 'cheap' or 'VIP' rides.

Meter Off (Taksimetre Kapalı)
Driver leaves meter off and quotes an inflated flat rate at destination.

Driver claims meter broken, offers fixed price, then increases it mid-ride.
